Salary: £45,356 per annum during training, increasing to £72,606 per annum upon successful completion of the training programme.

This position requires regular attendance at the Sellafield site. Applicants must reside within approximately one hour travelling distance of Sellafield, or be willing to relocate prior to appointment.

As a Trainee Train Driver at Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS), you'll undertake an intensive training programme designed to provide you with the knowledge, skills and competence required to become a qualified Train Driver.

You'll work towards achieving your European Train Driver Licence whilst learning how to safely operate trains, undertake train preparation activities, carry out shunting duties and support the delivery of rail services which play a vital role in the UK's nuclear industry.

What You'll Be Learning and Doing

As part of your development programme, you'll gain the skills, knowledge and competence required to safely undertake a range of rail operational activities.

Becoming a Qualified Train Driver

You'll learn how to:

• Safely and punctually operate train services.
• Work in compliance with Railway Group Standards and associated railway documentation.
• Comply with Dangerous Goods Regulations (RID).
• Follow company procedures and operational standards.
• Complete operational reports and documentation accurately.
• Meet competency and assessment requirements throughout your training.
• Work safely whilst supporting the requirements of the Competency Management System (CMS).

Learning Train Person Duties

As part of your development, you'll gain experience in:

• Following operational rules, standards and procedures.
• Carrying and maintaining required PPE and equipment.
• Ensuring documentation is correctly completed and issued to trains.
• Arriving prepared and ready for duty.
• Working safely and professionally at all times.
• Meeting all required competency assessments.

Traffic Examination and Shunting Activities

Depending on operational requirements, you'll receive training to undertake:

• Traffic Examination duties on rail vehicles.
• Shunting operations and associated activities.
• Rail vehicle inspections and checks.
• Competency management activities to ensure refresher assessments are completed on time.

Developing Route and Traction Knowledge

A key part of becoming a successful Train Driver is building and maintaining route and traction competence.

You'll:

• Develop and maintain route knowledge and traction competence.
• Monitor your own competence levels and identify refresher requirements.
• Follow route knowledge request procedures.
• Retain the skills required to operate safely across authorised routes and traction types.

Managing Publications, Notices and Competence

You'll learn how to:

• Review, acknowledge and understand operational publications and notices.
• Comply fully with CMS requirements.
• Ensure publications are current and up to date.
• Carry relevant notices and safety information whilst on duty.
• Review notice cases and local notices where applicable.

Training and Continuous Development

As part of your development programme you'll:

• Attend all training courses required for the role.
• Complete Non-Technical Skills (NTS) training.
• Complete Radiological Awareness training.
• Participate in operational exercises and training events.
• Continuously develop knowledge, skills and competence throughout the programme.

What We're Looking For

Essential Qualifications

Applicants must hold:

• GCSE English Language Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent).
• GCSE Mathematics Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent).
• Full UK Car Driving Licence.
• Be a minimum of 21 years of age upon completion of training.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Applicants must be able to demonstrate experience working within a safety-critical, highly regulated or operational environment where compliance with procedures, standards and safe working practices formed a significant part of their role.

This experience may have been gained within:

• Rail and Transport Operations.
• Nuclear Industry.
• Armed Forces (Army, Royal Navy, RAF or Reserves).
• Emergency Services (Police, Fire & Rescue, Ambulance Service or Coastguard).
• Aviation Operations.
• Utilities and Power Generation.
• Oil and Gas.
• Maritime Operations.
• Logistics and Freight Operations.
• Public Sector Operational Services.
• Security Services and Defence Organisations.
• Other highly regulated operational environments.

Applicants must also be able to demonstrate:

• Experience of working to procedures, standards, rules or regulatory requirements.
• Experience of taking responsibility for safety, compliance, quality or operational performance.
• Strong concentration, attention to detail and the ability to remain vigilant whilst undertaking routine activities.
• The ability to remain calm and make sound decisions under pressure.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• The ability to work independently whilst contributing effectively as part of a team.
• A flexible approach to working patterns and operational disruption.
• The ability to learn, retain and apply significant volumes of technical and safety-critical information.
• An awareness of safety-critical working practices.
• The potential to obtain and maintain Personal Track Safety competence, Rules and Regulations competence, traction competence and route knowledge.

Additional Information

To be successful in this role you'll need to:

• Meet the medical requirements of GORT3251 Group Standard, including drugs and alcohol testing.
• Live within approximately one hour travelling distance of the Sellafield depot due to the safety-critical nature of the role.
• Obtain and maintain SC Security Clearance.
• Demonstrate flexibility, adaptability and a commitment to continuous development.
• Be willing to work shifts, nights, weekends and public holidays.
• Be willing and able to travel when required.
