About the role

We are looking for a Junior Design Engineer to join our Technical Solutions team and support the delivery of engineering design, analysis and project activities.

This is a development-focused role, ideal for someone early in their engineering career who is keen to build technical capability within a highly regulated, safety-critical environment. You’ll contribute to the safe and effective transport of radioactive materials (RAM), gaining hands-on experience across a range of engineering projects while working under the guidance of experienced engineers.

What you’ll be doing

  • Supporting engineering design and analysis activities for RAM transport systems
  • Assisting in the development of safety cases for transport assets and systems
  • Applying engineering principles to help solve technical challenges, with guidance from senior colleagues
  • Supporting the development of scopes of work, including identifying risks and contributing to mitigation plans
  • Planning and monitoring your own work to meet agreed timelines, budgets and quality standards
  • Producing and communicating technical information clearly, with support where needed
  • Working within company processes and systems, contributing to continuous improvement initiatives
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across engineering, projects and wider business functions
  • Developing your knowledge of engineering design, analysis and regulated industry requirements

Training & development

This role is designed as a developmental pipeline position, providing experience across engineering design, analysis and project delivery. The successful candidate will be supported to build capability and progress into more senior engineering roles within NTS.

You’ll benefit from:

  • Structured on-the-job learning with support from experienced engineers
  • Exposure to real-world engineering design, analysis and project delivery
  • Mentoring and guidance to develop technical and professional skills
  • Opportunities to work towards professional registration (e.g. IEng/CEng)
  • Continuous development across technical disciplines, including design, analysis and safety case work

Who we’re looking for

Experience

  • A degree in Engineering (preferably Mechanical), or currently working towards one
  • Some exposure to engineering design, analysis or project work (academic or industry)
  • Experience working as part of a team to deliver shared objectives

Knowledge

  • Understanding of core engineering principles
  • Awareness of engineering design and analysis methods
  • Basic knowledge of regulated or safety-critical environments (desirable)
  • Awareness of safety case development (desirable)

Skills & behaviours

  • Strong problem-solving ability and willingness to learn
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly
  • Collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively within a team
  • Self-motivated with good organisational and time management skills
  • Curious and proactive approach to developing technical knowledge
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Positive attitude towards continuous improvement and personal development
