Train Driver – Inverness
Location: Inverness Reporting to: Operations Manager Security Status: Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) Medical: Train Driver Medical GO/RT3451 (including Drugs & Alcohol screening and ECG where applicable) Security Pass: DRS / P4 (location dependent)
Please note - We are currently not hosting trainee train drivers, please only apply if you have a valid up to date train driving license

At NTS, our Train Drivers play a vital role at the heart of the UK’s nuclear and specialist freight rail operations. From Inverness, you’ll help deliver safe, reliable and punctual services that support our customers, our communities and the UK’s critical national infrastructure.
As a Train Driver, you’ll be trusted with operating trains safely and professionally, carrying out train preparation, shunting and inspection activities, and upholding the highest standards of safety, security and compliance — every shift, every journey.
This is a safety‑critical role for individuals who take pride in precision, professionalism and teamwork.
What you’ll be doing
Train driving & operational delivery
Safely and punctually operating train services in line with DRS and NTS operational requirements
Fully complying with GE/RT8000, Group Standards and all associated operational documentation
Carrying out train preparation, driving and shunting activities to the highest safety standards
Completing all required documentation accurately, including reports and operational records
Working responsibly and safely at all times, ensuring compliance with the DRS Competency Management System (CMS)
Train Person duties
Performing Train Person duties when required, including:
Carrying all required equipment and PPE
Arriving at work on time and fit for duty
Ensuring all documentation is completed and issued correctly
Working safely and professionally at all times
Traffic examination & shunting
Carrying out Traffic Examination checks on relevant rail vehicles when required
Undertaking safe and compliant shunting activities
Managing your own competence to ensure refreshers are completed ahead of expiry dates
Competence, route & traction knowledge
Developing, maintaining and retaining route and traction knowledge as directed by the Operations Manager and Regional Operations Development Manager
Monitoring personal traction and route competence to ensure full compliance
Following route knowledge request processes and CMS requirements at all times
Compliance, publications & notices
Observing, acknowledging and acting on all publications and notices
Ensuring all documentation is current, correctly amended and signed for
Carrying relevant notices and publications while on duty or as issued via company systems
Checking notice cases where applicable
Training & development
Attending all mandatory training and refresher courses required by DRS
Actively participating in exercises, assessments and development activities
Maintaining competence in line with CMS standards
Safety & security
Fully supporting the company’s safety policies and objectives
Attending safety days and briefings
Promptly reporting hazards, incidents and accidents
Maintaining personal PPE
Complying with all security requirements, including:
Carrying correct ID and P4 passes
Working in accordance with site risk assessments
Maintaining security awareness and reporting incidents
Not disclosing sensitive information
Holding and maintaining appropriate security clearance
Additional duties
Driving road vehicles when required, in line with company policy and road safety standards
Adjusting driving behaviour based on conditions and weather
Who we’re looking for
Experience
At least 2 years’ post‑qualification experience
Experience of driving freight trains
Proven experience working within the rail industry and safety‑critical environments
Knowledge
Good knowledge of the UK rail industry and Group Standards
Understanding of safety‑critical working practices
Awareness of DRS operations and business context
Skills & behaviours
Able to work confidently both independently and as part of a team
Flexible approach to working patterns
Strong attention to safety, professionalism and detail
Ability to obtain and maintain:

Additional requirements
Aged 21 or over on completion of training
Full, clean UK driving licence
Medically fit to GO/RT3251, including drugs and alcohol testing
Living within approximately one hour travelling time of the Inverness depot
Willing and able to travel as required

Core: Manual Handling, Fire Awareness, Car Driver Assessment
Systems: TOPS, electronic devices
